January to May 2020 Rape case in Nigeria

Image
Do you know that between January and May 2020, the Nigerian Police has recorded 717 rape cases across the country,799 suspects arrested, 631 of which have been conclusively investigated and charged to court, 52 still under investigation... Do you also know that * Victim Blaming has stopped so many people from reporting their abuse cases? * Mishandling of rape cases too has led to increase in the crime as well as making victims cold towards seeking legal recourse? *The Nigerian anti rape law also has its shortcomings, as victims are made to produce proofs that consent wasn't given? *The senate passed a bill in 2015 which prescribed life imprisonment for rapist and anyone who has any form of sexual relationship with a child under the age of 11? Yet this has not deterred the criminals because instead of the prescribed punishment, these guys are often pardoned and ask to offer community service. * The effects of rape on a victim is such that affects him/her socially, psychologically,...

Sexual Education Is Important For Children

Image
I feel comfortable addressing this issues because i felt we are all suffering from it now. Our society today thinks successful parenting is evaluated by the amount of the education given to a child academically, but alas! It is very wrong. We need to start fostering sex education in our homes, schools and other social intitutions. According to World Health Organization (WHO), sex education can be defined as the ability to learn about cognition, emotion, social, interaction, and physical aspect of sexuality which must be age - appropriate. Age- appropriate in the sense that the contents of explanation should differ depending on the age of the child. Some parents see sex education has a Taboo and they hide away from it leaving the child as they grow, to figure it out themselves. Some parents who think they're helping their girl child are doing nothing than making unreasonable threats, what this does is that it causes more harm as it affect her emotionally and psychologica...
